Mass protests erupt across Bengaluru and Patna demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over SIR voter list deletion allegations. Read more on the row.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar resignation protest

BENGALURU / PATNA — Escalating their confrontation with the Election Commission of India (ECI), civil society groups, prominent youth influencers, and top leaders of the INDIA bloc staged massive coordinated protests on October 8, 2026, demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged widespread irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

From a high-voltage citizen protest at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park led by social media creator Dhruv Rathee, actor-activist Prakash Raj, and Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, to an ‘Aakrosh March’ in Patna headed by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, the agitation against the election authority reached a flashpoint across multiple state capitals.

Freedom Park Stir: Youth and Civil Society Convene ‘People’s Tribunal’

At Bengaluru’s Freedom Park, over 2,000 demonstrators, including university students, women’s groups, and civil society activists, gathered under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and allied youth outfits. Demonstrators waved placards bearing slogans such as “Error 404 – Name Not Found”, “Don’t erase us, hear us”, and “Grand Theft Democracy”.

Addressing the gathering, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee slammed the poll body for lack of institutional openness.

“There is zero transparency and zero accountability from the Election Commission over the SIR exercise. I have not come here for regime change, but to protect basic democratic accountability,” Rathee said during his address.

Actor Prakash Raj accused the ECI of orchestrating an institutional assault on voters’ rights.

“The SIR exercise is not merely about deletion of votes; it is an attack on the dignity and rights of citizens. The Election Commission of India has insulted the entire country through SIR,” Raj alleged, asserting that the exercise was operating under executive influence.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke vowed to sustain the agitation.

“Voter deletions under the Special Intensive Revision were aimed at disenfranchising citizens. We will hit the streets, reclaim democracy, and continue agitation till the CEC resigns,” Dipke stated.

A People’s Tribunal, featuring legal luminaries like retired Supreme Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda, was organized at the venue to record testimony from affected citizens. Among those presenting evidence was Mujibur Rehman, a Bengaluru-based software engineer, who alleged his name was removed without prior notification through a fraudulent Form 7 application.

Patna Clashes: Tejashwi Yadav Led ‘Aakrosh March’ Blocked

Simultaneously in Bihar, the opposition INDIA bloc organized an ‘Aakrosh March’ from Patna’s Shaheed Smarak toward Lok Bhavan. Led by former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, along with CPI(ML) Liberation and Congress leaders, the march was intercepted by law enforcement officers using heavy barricading near the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office.

High-voltage drama ensued as Tejashwi Yadav and several party MLAs climbed atop police vehicles after attempting to breach security cordons. Police subsequently moved protesters into transport vehicles and escorted them to Lok Bhavan.

“To save Gyanesh Kumar, barricades have been erected everywhere. No matter how much the administration tries to save him, people will definitely punish vote thieves,” Yadav told reporters while being escorted by police.

During the stand-off in Patna, former CPI(ML) Liberation MLA Ajit Kushwaha fainted due to overcrowding and heat before being attended to by medical personnel. Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma clarified that top leaders were taken to Lok Bhavan to ensure administrative order and prevent security breaches.

Political Conflict Over Form 7 and Electoral Roll Audits

The nationwide uproar follows growing political debate surrounding the usage of Form 7—the official ECI application used for objecting to inclusion or seeking deletion of a name in the electoral roll.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge intensified attacks on the ruling establishment, alleging systematic misuse of digital filing systems. Kharge claimed that fraudulent applications were submitted declaring living citizens as deceased to scrub them from voter registries.

The Election Commission of India has repeatedly rejected allegations of deliberate voter suppression or procedural bias. Official spokespersons maintain that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a routine constitutional process aimed strictly at removing duplicate entries, shifted voters, and deceased electors to ensure electoral integrity. The ECI previously noted that statutory appeal mechanisms remain open for any voter seeking reinstatement.
