Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the convergence of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI as the “next frontier of inclusive development.” Speaking to ANI, he emphasized that India’s digital journey, rooted in public good rather than proprietary interests, provides a practical roadmap for the Global South to achieve rapid, equitable growth.

India’s Vision for DPI and AI Convergence

The Prime Minister elaborated that India’s digital transformation was built on intentional, replicable principles. Unlike many global models that rely on closed systems, India opted for an open and interoperable architecture. This foundation allowed innovation to flourish on a common base layer, ensuring that technology serves the masses rather than a select few.

“Our success with Aadhaar and UPI was not accidental,” PM Modi stated. He noted that designing for scale and inclusion from day one ensured these systems work for 1.4 billion people. Whether it is a farmer in a remote village or a student in a small town, the goal remains the same: empowering every citizen regardless of their literacy or socio-economic status.

Transforming Governance Through Artificial Intelligence

By layering Artificial Intelligence over existing digital frameworks, the Prime Minister believes governance can become significantly more responsive. This integration is expected to strengthen fraud detection, improve welfare targeting, and support complex urban planning. The focus is not on adopting technology for its own sake, but on using it as a tool for “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

The government is prioritizing AI literacy and robust data privacy protections to complement this shift. PM Modi highlighted that the convergence of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and AI will specifically benefit MSMEs, women entrepreneurs, and informal workers by providing them with tools previously reserved for large corporations.

A Global Model for the Global South

India is now actively sharing its “India Stack” with the world. Through the Global DPI Repository (GDPIR) and various Memorandums of Understanding, India has partnered with over 10 countries, including Kenya, Cuba, and Colombia. This initiative aims to help friendly nations replicate India’s success in digital identity and real-time payments.

With UPI processing over 1,300 crore transactions in a single month and DigiLocker serving 30 crore users, the scale of India’s DPI is unparalleled. As these platforms evolve to integrate AI, India stands positioned as a leader in human-centric technology, offering a sustainable alternative to profit-driven digital models.
