The democratic party President of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid met with the Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar of India. The official visit of Jaishankar to the Maldives is to again improve their bilateral relationship.
After meeting the external affairs minister, the Maldivian democratic President has given the remarks that India would respond to the Maldives any time the Maldives “dial an international 911”. Indeed, the main opposition Democratic Party also sheds light on the fact that the initial remarks given by the current government by stocking the sentiments of India. His aggressive slogans and mockery have led to a decline in tourism in Maldives. Therefore, the Maldives have faced challenges, unnecessary losses, and economic losses. Considering this in mind, the country has suddenly considered recalibrating the Maldives-India policy.
The relationship between Maldives with India has come across severe tension or strain after Mohammad took charge the previous year. After taking an oath, his demand was to withdraw the military personnel of India by manning “three aviation platforms” presented by India to their nation. After a long discussion between the countries, the decision was taken to replace the military personnel with the civilians.
After the losses experienced by the Maldives, the President has considered India as their closest allies. Moreover, the President has reaffirmed the full commitment to strengthening the close yet historic connections between the countries. The relationship between India and Maldives is based entirely on territorial integrity, regional security, mutual respect and a peaceful Indian Ocean.
MDP has considered signing the MoU with “The National Payments Corporation of India” and “Economic Development”. The aim is to expand and enhance payment systems. The projects have been launched through the “USD 800 million Line of Credit” and grew through the “EXIM Bank of Bank”.
It has also been mentioned in the article that the Maldives is one of the vital maritime neighbours of India in the region of the Indian Ocean as well as the bilateral ties which include security, defence and others.
