Jammu and Kashmir Weather Update: Rain and Snow Bring Relief

Snow-covered mountains in Ladakh following fresh winter precipitation and weather changes.

Jammu and Kashmir Weather Update

The recent Jammu and Kashmir weather update brings significant relief to local residents and farmers alike. Light rains have consistently lashed the Kashmir plains, while fresh snowfall continues to blanket higher altitudes in Ladakh. This sudden precipitation effectively breaks a prolonged and concerning winter dry spell across the northern Himalayan region.

Breaking the Prolonged Dry Spell

For months, the region faced unusually high temperatures and a severe lack of precipitation. The winter season this year was largely dry, recording a massive 54 percent deficit in expected rain and snowfall. This prolonged dry spell raised immediate concerns about water security, agricultural yield, and the local ecosystem.

The latest weather shift has changed the narrative completely. The current widespread showers and snowfall have successfully brought the temperatures down, realigning the climate closer to the seasonal normal. Locals are viewing this change as a much-needed reset for the valley’s environmental balance.

Current Jammu and Kashmir Weather Update: Region-Wise Details

The Meteorological Centre (MeT) has officially confirmed widespread precipitation across various districts. The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed consistent light rainfall over the past 48 hours. Similarly, significant showers soaked northern areas like Baramulla and Kupwara.

J&K weather update

According to an official from the J&K MeT department, Kupwara alone recorded 6.4 mm of rainfall in a short span. Furthermore, Pahalgam, a crucial tourist hub in south Kashmir, also received its fair share of rain. This widespread distribution ensures that the moisture penetrates deep into the valley’s agricultural soil.

Fresh Snowfall Blankets Ladakh and Higher Reaches

While the plains experienced rain, the higher altitudes saw a different, yet equally vital, weather phenomenon. Parts of the Union Territory of Ladakh witnessed intense snowfall for the second consecutive day. The frozen landscapes are crucial for maintaining the region’s glaciers and summer water supply.

Sonam Lotus, the Head of the Ladakh MeT centre, provided real-time insights into the situation. He stated that areas like Zojila and Zanskar experienced fresh and continuous snowfall.

“Currently snowing on Zojila-Drass, Panikhar-Zanskar area while cloudy at rest of the places of Ladakh. Raining at scattered places of Kashmir and cloudy in Jammu region,” Lotus updated via the social media platform X. He also noted that weather conditions are expected to show improvement very soon.

Sharp Decline in Regional Temperatures

The sudden influx of rain and snow has drastically altered the region’s thermal profile. In February, daytime temperatures had abnormally surged, hovering over the 22-degree Celsius mark. This unseasonal warmth had triggered early blooming in certain orchards, posing a high risk to the horticulture sector.

Following the recent showers, temperatures have plunged sharply across the Kashmir valley. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of just 12.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with the minimum dropping to 10.5 degrees during the night.

Other areas reported even steeper declines. Pahalgam recorded a daytime high of 9.0 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir saw the mercury drop to a chilling 5.4 degrees Celsius.

Crucial Advisory for the Farming Community

Agriculture and horticulture form the backbone of the region’s economy. The MeT department has issued a specific and timely advisory tailored for local farmers. Since the weather directly impacts farming schedules, precise planning is essential.

Fresh snowfall in Ladakh and rain in Kashmir plains

Meteorologists predict a brief window of dry weather on March 13 and 14. Consequently, the MeT advisory urges farmers to resume their critical farm operations during these two specific days. Utilizing this dry window will help them manage crops and orchards before the next spell of erratic weather hits the valley.

Forecast: Erratic Weather to Continue

Residents should not expect a permanent return to sunny days just yet. The overarching Jammu and Kashmir weather update suggests that atmospheric instability will persist. The MeT firmly predicts that erratic weather patterns will continue dominating the region until at least March 19.

Expect generally cloudy weather moving forward. A fresh spell of light rain, along with snow over the higher reaches, is likely to commence towards the night of March 15 and extend into the morning of March 16. This scattered precipitation will keep the region damp and cold.

Following a brief pause, scattered rains and snowfall will likely return on March 17, 18, and 19. The weather department notes that March 20 and 21 will remain generally dry. However, they cannot entirely rule out the possibility of brief, isolated light rain spells during this period.
