Filings As it steps up in the world of cutting-edge technology, India is taking big leaps in the development of 6G technology. Many Indian patents were filed for this next-generation technology, marking a crucial moment in India’s journey towards becoming a global leader in telecommunications.
What’s Coming with 6G?
While 5G networks have already set the bar high with their speed and efficiency, 6G aims to further revolutionize telecommunications across various industries. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, it will enable real-time communications across different platforms. 6G will also provide unprecedented support for emerging technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality. With its projected release by 2030, countries worldwide are competing to secure their place in this tech revolution.
While speaking at the PRana 2024 event, Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal said, “5G technology has been already rolled out. We are now planning for 6G. All of them will spur the growth in achieving the developed nation status that we are yearning for.”
Indian Patent Filings
After its successful deployment of 5G across the country, India is rapidly moving forward in the development of 6G. Today, it’s ranked among the top 6 in 6G tech patent filings globally. PM Narendra Modi has envisioned India to be at the forefront of 6G technology by 2030, contributing to its development and deployment. With initiatives like the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) and the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) campaign, the Indian government has promoted local innovation and research in telecommunications, playing a huge role in this development.
Strategic Investments
India has already implemented multiple initiatives such as the ‘Bharat 6G Alliance’ and ‘Bharat 6G Vision’. As per the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’, the government is currently evaluating 470 proposals for Accelerated Research on 6G Ecosystem. To enhance the 6G research, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has also funded two next-generation test beds. On August 24, experts from a government panel stated that India could achieve a 10% share of all 6G patents and one-sixth of contributions to global standards in the next 3 years.
Major Players
Several Indian companies and research institutions are at the forefront of 6G tech development. Major players in the telecom industry, such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, are investing heavily in research and innovation.
Key Events on the Global Calendar
For the first time in the ITU’s history of 150 years, the 10-day World Telecom Standardization Assembly 2024 is being held in New Delhi, India. Global telecom leaders, academia, and experts from over 190 countries are attending the WTSA 2024 to explore the future of key technologies like 6G and AI. The WTSA 2024 Outreach Sessions have been initiated by the DoT, scheduled in main cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi.
The Future Impact
By establishing itself as a leader in 6G technology, India is set to attract foreign investment, create more job opportunities, and stimulate economic growth. Bharat is about to play a crucial role in defining the future of world communication!
