Google will soon start producing its Pixel smartphones in India.
In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Google plans to manufacture the phones at a Foxconn facility that is currently in operation. Additionally, the company plans to produce drones on its own in the state.
In the wake of geopolitical tensions with the West, India has become a major destination for international businesses trying to diversify supply lines outside of China. Google revealed last year that it would start producing Pixel smartphones in India, starting with the Pixel 8.
A Google blog post stated, “India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones, and we’re committed to bringing the best of our hardware and underlying built-in software capabilities to people across the country.”
The BBC was informed on Friday by sources that Alphabet’s Google will start producing Pixel smartphones at the Tamil Nadu factory, with advanced models to be produced there later this year.
According to an insider, Google and Foxconn have a deal in place to accomplish this.
There are already two Foxconn locations in Tamil Nadu, which assemble Apple’s iPhones at one of its factories close to Chennai.
Google decided to manufacture Pixel phones in Tamil Nadu following a recent meeting between state representatives and business executives.
A statement from the Tamil Nadu government claims that Google representatives would shortly meet with MK Stalin, the state chief minister, in Chennai.
